CFS ENHANCED MAPPING PROJECT

Return to the South Australian  maps page

Although the bulk of the maps in these books are at 1:100 000 scale they actually reflect the data from the individual 1:50 000 scale map sheets reproduced at 1:100 000. These books are more up to date than the current printed individual maps.

(The Victorian equivalent of the South Australian CFS Map Books are the Vicmap Books. To view information on them click HERE).

The CFS Enhanced Mapping Project commenced in 1991 when the CFS in theSouth East identified a requirement to upgrade their Regional Map Books. Recognising the urgent need to develop a standard in mapping for all the Emergency Services the CFS established the CFS Enhanced MappingProject to progressively publish Regional Map Books across the state.

The CFS Enhanced Mapping Project has been able to produce these high quality Map Books as a result of excellent cooperation & support from Planning SA and the Department of Environment & Heritage.

The following list provides an overview of the features built into all CFS Regional Map Books:

  • The maps are printed using the new Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA94) This datum is specifiedas the Government Standard for the production of all new maps. GDA94 is the same as the datum used in almost all GPS units, World Geodetic System(WGS84). Thus coordinates obtained from any standard GPS unit will relate directly to these maps and vice versa.
  • The maps have been printed using the most recent data available. We have also incorporated hundreds of changes made by local people on draft copies of each map.
  • The size of the book is intended to allow for effective use by an operator in the confined space of a truck cabin, the front seat of a vehicle or in an aircraft.
  • The book has been produced usinga spiral binding. This allows the book to be opened to the page required turned inside out and placed back in its plastic sleeve. The plastic sleeve has been designed to provide a protective covering (water/rain resistant) and enable the operator to draw on the protective cover (with map marking pens) rather than permanently marking the map itself.
  • The indexpage provides a quick reference to the map/page required. The index map also provides the standard 1:50 000 map names allowing easy reference to the older maps.
  • Each map has been provided with the adjoining map numbers to the north, south. east & west, just like a street directory.
  • A clear plastic sleeve within the book (at the rear) provides a location to place plastic overlays, additional folded maps and/or telephone contact directories.
